It is getting real for our Seniors now. Some of the HHS Senior Class got up early to meet at the track and enjoy breakfast and the sunrise this morning. We are very appreciative of our Senior Class sponsors and parent volunteers for preparing the breakfast and making this a special Friday for our SENIOR CLASS OF 2027!
Congresswoman Erin Houchin will be hosting two U.S. Service Academy Days again this year. The first event will be at Scottsburg High School on Saturday, September 12th and the second event will be at North Decatur Jr/Sr High School on Saturday, September 26th. These events are for middle school/high school students and parents who are interested in learning more about the five U.S. Service Academies – the United States Military Academy at West Point, the United States Naval Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy – all of which offer a free college education to those interested in serving our country.

Because of the increase in prices from our vendors, some of the A la Carte prices had to be increased a little bit. Ice cream is now $1.25, milk is now $1.00, Breakfast Entrees are now $1.75, and the Lunch Entrees are now $3.00. The increase is not a big increase, but we wanted to let you know before school starts. Regular lunch prices are the same as last year.
We would also like to let parents know that even if their child is on Free Lunch, if they bring in their lunch and want milk, they have to pay for that milk. Milk is free with their purchased meal, but if they bring their lunch they will have to buy their milk, just like they would a juice or chips or cookies.

Our district is preparing to renew Ed-Flex Waiver #2, a state-approved flexibility framework that directly impacts our ability to recruit and retain high-quality classroom paraprofessionals across all four of our schools.
Traditionally, federal guidelines require instructional support staff to hold a specific number of college credits prior to hiring—even if those credits are entirely unrelated to education or childcare. By renewing this waiver, our district can instead prioritize what matters most: hiring candidates with real-world experience working with children, and providing them with robust, embedded job training as they work alongside our students. This flexibility is essential for maintaining the vital academic interventions and daily classroom support our students deserve.
How You Can Help: As part of the official application process, the state requires us to gather public feedback. Your input is an essential piece of this submission and demonstrates local community support to state reviewers.

BHSC Teacher Feature Friday
🔎 Each week, a central office committee reviews nominations and selects one educator from a rotating school (BES, HES, BHS, HHS). Winners receive a $50 Amazon gift card courtesy of the Kolton Kaiser Foundation. The nominator’s identity is revealed to the honoree on announcement day to keep the fun and suspense.
For our final week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday is a double feature, and this post spotlights Henryville High School.
Jeff Schroeder, HHS, English teacher
Experience: 36 years (33 at West Clark and Borden-Henryville)
College/University: IUS (Bachelor's) and Indiana Wesleyan (Master's)
Fun Facts: Mr. Schroeder's best sport in high school was tennis, yet he decided to play baseball in college.
"I made the decision 33 years ago to leave Madison Consolidated High School to accept a position at Henryville High School to teach English/Language Arts and coach baseball. That turned out to be one of the best decisions that I have ever made. The relationships that I have made with students, faculty, and community members during those years are near and dear to me. , " says Mr. Schroeder.
Mr. Schroeder was nominated by former student Cassie Walton. Her words about Mr. Schroeder reveal just how important positive, intentional relationships are in working with students. "Mr. Schroeder was my English teacher my senior year. I had him first period, and he is truly the only reason I made it to school each morning. I didn’t have any friends, didn’t talk that much. But Mr. Schroeder made sure to have at least one conversation with me each day because he knew I didn’t have anyone in my corner. He truly made such an impact on me my senior year, and I definitely couldn’t have done it without him," Cassie wrote.
Cassie’s story is a powerful reminder of the profound difference a caring teacher can make. Congratulations, Mr. Schroeder, on this wonderful recognition of your empathy, dedication, and heart. Thank you for making sure no one stands alone.
